It would seem incredible that a house fire in New York City could have ripples around the world. But stranger things have happened. This book launches the five-book Carlile Corners series set in middle America in the late 1800s, where one seventeen-year-old girl with an advantaged background has a sudden opportunity to show the stuff she’s made of... on the frontier of Oklahoma Territory.

Josie Wheeler and her younger brother Josh are suddenly orphaned when their New York house goes up in flames. Having lived their whole lives in the city, they are suddenly forced to journey across the country to live with their nearest relatives in the just-settled Oklahoma Territory. Fighting snakes, wolf packs and other hazards of frontier living, Josie experiences and learns more than she ever would have thought.

"Prairie Academy" describes a time on the American frontier where where life wasn't to be taken for granted -- and one's family and community pulling together was the only means of survival.

The "Carlile Corners" series stretches from Conestoga wagons and foot-sore travelers to the birth of the tin lizzie. It grows from the bow and arrow to a tail gunner in a stick and canvass flying machine. From jackrabbit stew and venison to chow lines in Europe, and from the spinning wheel to machine-woven wool worsted. In short, it was no life for the weak minded, so come along and check it out... See how a group of Americans lived, loved and simply persevered to get through it all.

I'm in love with "Prairie Academy." It offered me everything I wanted in a great story: compelling characters, fascinating, detailed information about life on the prairie in a different era, characters that show compassion, integrity and individuality, and details that make the reading experience come alive. I felt like I was there with the children, learning how to gather the best cow pies to make a fire in a stove, and I could smell the dust, the trees, feel the heat and cold, come to know the pioneer spirit through the eyes of several narrators, each with marvelous life stories.

I enjoyed the strong female protagonist, Josie Wheeler, who had to leave a life of advantage in New York City, to live on the prairie in the 1800's, when she and her brother were unexpectedly orphaned. Josie rises to the challenge, and becomes a teacher by default, intent on helping her students learn to use critical thinking skills to solve problems, engaging them in the process of learning, and finding the excitement in the exploration of knowledge.

I learned so much about the era, the land, and also the heart of the people who reached out to help each other, in spite of having so little of material value to share. I loved the strength and heart of each character, and how the community worked together to have their needs met, and to offer their children the education their parents were denied.

A story woven with hardships, interesting twists and turns, Prairie Academy kept me awake at night reading "just one more chapter" until my eyelids demanded to shut, or be propped open by toothpicks. The rich detail in this story makes it stand out above others in a similar vein. It's such an informative, interesting and satisfying read.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series! Prairie Academy has appeal to readers of all ages. Suitable for young readers and fascinating to adults, author Joann Ellen Sisco takes us all on an unforgettable journey through the hardships and joys of life on the prairie, with a cast of unforgettable characters, each of which I wish were MY neighbors.

*Note: I found a formatting error, and mentioned it in my first review, noting that though it existed, I still could not subtract a single star because the book was so well written, so fascinating. The president of Signalman books saw my note, and immediately contacted me help resolve the problem, which he could not replicate. I sent photos of a couple of problem pages of my Kindle edition, and from that, he was able to figure out the problem and correct it the next day. You have to love a publishing company so responsive to customers' comments, mirroring the integrity of the characters in Prairie Academy!

Prairie Academy Carlile Corners Book 1 edition by Joann Ellen Sisco Children eBooks Reviews

EXCELLENT
I agree with the other reviewers that this is a good story, however I think it could have used better editing or at least proofreading. There are words left out little words such as a, an, to and of. There are far too many sentences in which the endings don't comply with the beginnings. There are far too many one word sentences., leading me to feel that the author just published her notes and never got around to fleshing them out. Oh, and the author needs to figure out the difference between the words access and assess.
After a busy and trying week you will enjoy relaxing with Prairie Academy and immersing yourself in this interesting book that tells of time when a budding Oklahoma Territory community bands together to take care of a teacher that isn’t a teacher. Josie Wheeler, a highly educated and suddenly orphaned 17 year old girl, accidently falls into to being the teacher “who isn’t a teacher” and she tells the community of Carlile Corners over and over but somehow they just don’t listen. Each family is focused on keeping Miss Josie and taking care of her every need and she in turn does her very best to teach all the children even though she “isn’t a teacher”.
But it’s more than a heartwarming tale of an unexpected teacher dropped in the Oklahoma Territory. The author has peppered this book with loads of interesting period details that one of my generation wouldn’t know. Like using cow pats for fuel, strong boxes where there are no banks and how difficult finding education was in this primitive settlement. The author has created a warm and loving community we would all love to visit and you can between the pages of Prairie Academy
Good story but moves to slowly.
This is a good story with historic background and lots of adventure. It was fun to read and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I love reading about history, and this author does a wonderful job with her writing! Anyone who loved "Little House" should read these books.
I gave this book three stars as the writing was well done and it had some very likable characters in it. I did feel the story line was much more geared to youth fiction (YF) rather than adult fiction. The author spent a fair amount of time writing out the lessons the new teacher would present to the class and how it was based on the things her tutor had taught her. I'm not much of a skimmer when reading a book, but definitely skimmed over all the class work.

You had to really like the protagonist but thought it a bit unrealistic that everything she needed to set up this new class room/home facility just materialized. Only a few of the other characters were given much depth and those not much depth to really get to know them. I do believe it is a book that has some great prinicples for youth readers and perhaps adults too.

The authors first sentence in Notes from the Narrator asked "Don't you hate it when you get left with a bundle of loose end? So do I." She then spends the next 20 pages (kindle pages) giving information about what will happen in the next four books. I don't want my story line given to me in a list of facts; and, being felt to believe I have to have the next book to have a satifying end to the story. I believe any book in a series should be a stand alone book that leaves you WANTING to read the next book in the series. Not a book where you NEED to read the next in the series to complete the book you just finished.
